Position Overview:

We’re looking for a hands-on Head of AI Engineering who is based in Austin, Texas and thrives at the intersection of deep technical expertise, product ownership, and startup execution. This isn’t a research role or a pure management position—it’s a hybrid leadership role for someone who loves to build, ship, and lead by doing.

You’ll own the AI/ML roadmap, lead technical strategy, guide the team, and contribute directly to the development and deployment of production-grade models. You’ll work closely with the CEO to deliver AI-powered product improvements that create real customer value, and mentor the next generation of AI talent at mbue. If you’re a builder with founder energy—comfortable juggling technical, product, and leadership hats—this is your role.

This position requires you to be based in Austin, TX or willing to relocate.

Here’s what you’ll be doing:

• Own mbue’s AI roadmap and drive delivery of transformative features and models
• Lead strategic decisions around data, ML infrastructure, and architecture
• Guide technical execution across R&D and production environments
• Contribute code and prototypes where needed —this is a hands-on leadership role
• Collaborate with the product and engineering teams to define specs, prioritize backlogs, and ship fast
• Mentor and grow the AI/ML team
• Help launch mbue Submittals v1.0 and define the scope and vision for v2.0
• Champion customer-centric innovation, balancing experimentation with delivery
• Represent mbue in public forums, technical communities, and conferences when appropriate

What we’re looking for:

Must-Haves:

• Deep hands-on expertise in computer vision and deep learning (Python, PyTorch)
• Proven experience owning the full ML lifecycle—developing, deploying, and maintaining production systems
• Strong software engineering fundamentals—testing, modular design, scalability
• Product ownership mindset: able to define deliverables, write specs, and prioritize work
• Startup DNA: thrives in ambiguity, moves fast, balances scrappiness with quality
• Natural leadership and mentorship ability—can elevate team members and create clarity
• Customer-centric: grounds technical decisions in real-world value and user needs
• Bias for action: gets things done, ships to learn, and iterates quickly
• Excellent communicator and cross-functional collaborator

Nice-to-Haves:

• Experience with multimodal transformer models (text + image)
• SaaS/B2B product experience with measurable impact
• Familiarity with AEC industry
• Track record of building and scaling high-performing technical teams
• Public presence: open source contributions, technical writing, conference talks
