Job Description

Job Title: Attorney

Job Status: Part-time

Job Summary: Under limited direction from a senior-level manager, the Attorney uses specialized knowledge in law and skills obtained through experience, specialized training or certification to provide legal advice to clients of ACCESS across a wide array of disciplines including divorce, civil, criminal matters and immigration. Independently evaluates and selects legal techniques, procedures and criteria using judgment in solving cases in the legal realm. Drafts complex legal documentation and works on moderately complex cases. May assist clients with appearances in courts and administrative agencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct assessment of legal situation, problems and needs of clients
  • Advise clients as to their legal rights in various matters and draw up legal documents pertaining to client’s case
  • Gather evidence in divorce, civil and/or criminal matters to formulate defense or initiate legal action
  • Interview clients and witnesses and handle other details in preparation for trial
  • Prepare legal briefs and develop strategy, arguments and testimony in preparation of legal case
  • Conduct research related to the law
  • Confer with colleagues with specialties in areas of law not handled by ACCESS
  • Represent clients in court and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies
  • Refer clients to attorneys who specialize in legal services not provided by ACCESS
  • Maintain currency in laws related to legal disciplines offered to clients
  • Maintain agency confidentiality and client privacy
  • Operate standard office equipment and use required software applications
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

  • Operating standard office equipment and using required software applications for program area and other applications, including Microsoft Office

Ability to:

  • Speak, read and write Arabic or language of client population(s) served
  • Facilitate meetings, ensuring that all viewpoints, ideas and problems are addressed
  • Gather information, identify linkages and trends and apply findings to cases
  • Must have good clarity of thought, discretion and judgment ability
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Develop rapport with client and to engender confidence with the client and in their own professional competence and judgment
  • Handle stressful situations and provide a high level of customer service in a calm and professional manner
  • Read, analyze and interpret statutes, general business and legal periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations
  • Write contracts, opinions, briefs, reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from courts, regulators, clients, customers and the general public

Educational/Previous Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum Degree Required:
  • Jurist Doctorate degree
  • Required Disciplines:
    • Law

  • At least 4 years of legal and litigation experience is preferred
  • Any equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training approved by Human Resources

Working Conditions:

Hours: Normal business hours, some additional hours may be required
